Douglas County Oregon

Douglas County covers 5,089 square miles, stretching from Mt. Thielsen in the Cascades to the Pacific Ocean. There are timberland and lush forests, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, pastures, meadows, orchards, farmland, dunes, and beaches.

Agriculture in Douglas County

The mild climate and rich variety of soil types contribute to successful crops such as grapes, berries, nuts, melons, apples, plums and nurseries. The area is a major sheep and cattle producer and also known for Arabian and quarter horse ranches, llama, rabbits, pygmy goats, long-eared donkeys, pigs, chinchilla and homing and racing pigeons.

Parks

Douglas County Park Department of Oregon has over 77 parks covering 3338 acres. It was the first park system in Oregon and has picnicking, fishing, boating, equestrian trails, hiking, swimming, ocean dune recreation, and crabbing for locals and tourists who love outdoor activities.

Umpqua National Forest

Some of the world’s most dense stands of Douglas Fir, Hemlock and Cedar are in almost a million acres of the western slopes of the Oregon Cascades. North Umpqua River waterfalls, spectacular scenery, and numerous recreational activities abound for its visitors.

Oregon Camping

Camping in Oregon is great and Douglas County has it all. Both hookup and non-hookup camp spots abound for camping in the mountains or at the beach. Oregon State Parks are known for their pristine beauty.

Historic Attractions in Douglas County

Six covered bridges are found in the Land of Umpqua, and you can take the Coos Bay Wagon Road to the Oregon Coast. See historic homes and districts like the town of Oakland - the first city in Oregon to establish an historic district. The Douglas County Museum of History and Natural History recount the history of days gone by as well as natural resources.

Transportation

Roseburg Regional Airport is open to the public, but has no commercial service or control tower. It does have an asphalt runway in good condition (4602 x 100 ft), and airport services. Greyhound Bus has a station in Roseburg. Traffic is light to moderate and roads and streets are in good condition.

Business, Industry, and Employment in the Roseburg Area

Wood products have always been the backbone of the area's economy, but diversification of the economic base is being pursued. Specialty electronics, research and development, business forms, and law enforcement rain gear are just some of the items manufactured in the area. Personnel and Employment Services are instrumental in providing jobs to Douglas County residents.

Douglas County Hospitals

Mercy Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Medical Center are in Roseburg, as well as a cancer treatment center, several fully staffed emergency clinics, an outpatient surgery center, two medical supply firms and accredited convalescent and nursing centers.

Douglas County Library

10 branch libraries of the Douglas County Library system serve the area and library cards are free to all residents of Douglas County.

Churches in Roseburg

Over 100 churches and assemblies representing 50 denominations or religious organizations are in the Roseburg area.

Seven Feathers Casino and Resort

A large convention center, hotel, restaurant, and casino with regular entertainment is found south of Roseburg on I-5 at the Seven Feathers Casino and Resort.

Festivals, Fairs, and Fast Cars

Over a dozen annual fairs, festivals and rodeos, celebrating such events as forestry, wildflowers, art, crafts, harvests, antique cars, and more are found in the Roseburg area and the coast. Pacific Racing Association has auto racing at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Speedway track as well as numerous rodeos.

Cultural Activities

UACT (Umpqua Actors Community Theater) and the Umpqua Community College theater department present a number of live theatrical and musical productions. Roseburg Community Concert Association and the Umpqua Symphony Association bring in fine music as does the Music on the Halfshell set in the park. The Umpqua Valley Arts Center promotes local artists year-round and in their annual festival, as well as offering workshops and classes.

Schools in Douglas County

Umpqua Community College has a beautiful campus, surrounded by forested hills, bordered by the Umpqua River, and offering a wide variety of classes, both for credit and community education from painting to martial arts and a number of other interesting subjects. The area’s schools range from public to private Christian schools. A beauty college is in Roseburg as well.
